She completed her studies at Marquette University, and after completing her graduation from Concordia University, Montreal, she moved to the University of Missouri. 

From the Northern Illinois University of Law, she obtained her Juris Doctor in 1981. In Northern Illinois University College of Law, she was appointed as Editor-in-Chief, and later she got appointed for 2nd District Illinois Appellate Court.

In 1991, Kathleen led the foundation of her firm named Kathleen T. Zellner& Associates in Illinois. She attained a degree in handling wrongful conviction cases, medical malpractice, prisoner abuse cases, and civil rights violations. Some of her notable clients include Kevin Fox, Steven Avery, and some more exonerees that are in the list of National Registry of Exonerations. A lawyer even said in an interview with Newsweek that facing Kathleen was worse.

In 2016, she earned over $90 million from medical malpractice lawsuits and wrongful convictions. In the United States, she is one of the top ten lawyers for suicide malpractice. She has made a large sum of money from winning verdicts for some of her notable clients.

Robert and Kathleen Zellner met at Marquette University and grew close. Even though Kathleen Zellner finished her degree at the University of Missouri, they were fortunate with the initial transfer. Her husband, Robert, encouraged her to pursue a legal education. Although she finished her degree at the University of Missouri, they benefited from the initial transfer. Soon after Zellner spent her first semester, the young couple legally married. Her spouse asked that the young woman pursue a career in law.
