His mother is Patty Duke, a famous actress who acted in many films and television series and worked as a mental health advocate. In 1972, his mother married John Astin, an actor, and after the marriage, he adopted Sean. He has a brother named Mackenzie Astin, who was born in 1973, then they all lived happily as a family of four.

In 1985, Patty Duke and John Astin filed for divorce and separated officially; the reason for the divorce is unknown. After that, Sean’s mother again married a man named Mike Pearce in 1986, and in 1989, they both adopted a son named Kevin.
